How to repair cracks in an asphalt driveway

Knowing how to repair asphalt is a cost-effective way to preserve and protect your asphalt’s foundation and surface over time. Asphalt and concrete driveways are vulnerable to winter cycles of freezing and thawing, erosion, and moisture. Learn how to fix driveway cracks the right way—before they get worse this winter.

To begin, purchase the right crack filler or asphalt patch repair solution. Next, follow these steps to repair cracks with an asphalt repair product:

  1. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from debris.
  2. Ensure the driveway is smooth and clean.
  3. Remove any pieces of asphalt, dirt, or debris from the crack.
  4. Clean or flush out the crack with a Shop-Vac, air gun, or garden hose.
  5. Allow the crack to dry before filling it.
  6. Fill the crack with asphalt crack filler.
  7. Use a scraper to smooth out the filler. Allow it to dry 4-8 hours.
  8. Mix asphalt driveway sealant and pour it along the width of the driveway.
  9. Use a squeegee at a 45-degree angle to pull and compress the product.
  10. Work back and forth to completely cover the driveway surface.
  11. Allow the surface to dry 24 hours before walking on it and 72 hours before driving on it.
